Tragic opera in three acts, with libretto by
Francesco Maria Piave, taken from The Corsair by George Gordon,
Lord Byron. Verdi began working on the the music for Il corsaro in 1846; however, a lengthy illness forced him to postpone work on it. When the score was finally completed in early 1848, production was delayed by revolution. The first performance, in Trieste while Verdi was in Paris, was not well received and it eventually fell from the repertory. Liceu
Concert version
'Il corsaro, though it is much less daring than other contemporary works by Verdi and has a predictable, old-fashioned dramatic structure, nonetheless possesses some of the finest musical passages the composer wrote at the time. Medora’s aria, the duet between Gulnara and Corrado («Seid la vuole») and the entire final act fully deserve to be included in a Liceu season, at least in concert version. Il corsaro is one of the few Verdi operas that have never yet been heard at the Liceu.'
